Santa Maria, Santa Barbara County
Santa Maria is the largest city in Santa Barbara County, set in a broad valley that opens to the ocean. Strawberries, broccoli and lettuce grow on the valley floor, and the surrounding benchlands were recognized as a wine region in 1981. Rocket launches from Vandenberg Space Force Base, a few miles to the southwest, can be seen from town.
